Instructors:  Robyn Schrager and Brooke Nico

Class Fee:  $20

We have been having so much fun designing with rectangles here at Kirkwood Knittery.  It’s amazing what wonderful garments you can make with just a simple garter stitch rectangle (think big scarf!): dressy wraps, stoles, and jackets to suit any style or occasion.  At this workshop, we are all going to play with draping rectangles of various dimensions, and see what garments we can create with or without a few simple seams.  Then, Robyn and Brooke will talk you through the knitty-gritty of planning your own rectangle design, from yarn choice, needle size, and all the math!  Come prepared to play and drape, wear simple clothes, a t-shirt or turtleneck recommended.

Instructors:  Robyn Schrager and Brooke Nico

Class Fee:  $120

After much thought and discussion, we came up with a syllabus for designing knit or crocheted garments, which we are really excited about.  This class will be lecture with homework.  We will start with an introduction to designing and patternmaking.  You will learn to make your own basic sloper or pattern, which will be the basis of every design.  We’ll talk about garment styles as well as body shapes, using the knitted fabric to achieve the design goals, as well as aesthetic guidelines such as symetry, texture, color.  You’ll also learn the technical aspects of writing, grading, layout and publishing options once your design is complete.  Though the emphasis will be on sweaters, the principles covered in the seminar are easily applied to other projects.  You will not be expected to design a complete garment by the end of the course, but you will have a thorough knowledge of the components involved.

Advanced Intermediate skill required.  Must have a working knowledge of shaping.

Everything You Wanted To Know About Knitting Series

Saturdays 11:00-12:00

Instructors: Brooke Nico and Robyn Schrager

Class Fee:  $10 per session

Here’s the 2nd half to the series started in the fall.  We heard from many of you about the various skills you wanted to add to your repertoire.  You can pick and choose from any of the sessions, or take all of them.  Each session is designed for the beginning/intermediate knitter, with a basic knowledge of the knit and purl stitches.  This series will give you the skills necessary to take your knitting to the next level.

Reading Patterns and Charts:  Jan 9

Does it often seem that patterns are written in a foreign language?  This is the session for you.  We’ll explore the lingo of knitting patterns as well as the ins and outs of reading charts.

Fitting 101:  Jan. 23

Ever end up with a beautiful sweater, perfectly sized for an elephant?  The most common mistake in handknitted garments is in the fitting.  In this session we’ll learn how to measure ourselves, how to read those pattern sizes, what ease is, and how yarn choice impacts your final garment size.

Colorwork:  Jan. 30

Fair Isle and Intarsia are 2 techniques used to add color to your knitting.  In this session, we’ll learn the ins and outs of both techniques.

Twists and Turns:  Feb. 6

Cables are fun and easy to do.  In this session learn how to make a basic cable, both with and without a cable needle, and how to read a cable chart.

Surface Embellishments:  Feb 13

There are many different ways to add surface texture to your knitting.  In this session we’ll learn about bobbles, tucks and welts, and duplicate stitch to name a few.

Steeking:  Feb. 20

The mere word is enough to bring on a panic attack in the most experienced knitter.  In actuality, it is much easier that you would expect.  We’ll discuss the methods in preparing your knitting for steeking and how to do the actual steek.

Blocking:  Feb. 27

The final step to any knitted piece, and the step that will take your knitting to the professional level.  We’ll talk about the different ways to block different fibers and about the tools to use.  We’ll also show a sample of lace blocking.
